Natural Gas Tumbles, MCX Futures Down Nearly 5%

The Natural Gas futures tumbled sharply today as a retreat from near three weeks continued. Cues from equities are mixed ahead of the weekend but the Natural Gas traders sold heavily after the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) stated yesterday that working natural gas storage in the US was 2,533 billion cubic feet. This marked a net decrease of 81 billion cubic feet from the previous week and the current level is around 77 billion cubic feet less than last year at this time and 327 billion cubic feet below the five-year average of 2,860 billion cubic feet.

However, traders rather focused on the medium term supply outlook. In its January Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), released earlier this week, the EIA forecast that US dry natural gas production will average 90.2 billion cubic feet per day in 2019 and 92.2 billion cubic feet per day in 2020, higher than the average of 83.3 billion cubic feet in 2018. EIA also forecast that Henry Hub natural gas spot prices will average 2.89 US dollars per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in 2019 and 2.92 dollars per MMBtu in 2020, down from 3.15 dollars per MMBtu in 2018.

The prices plummeted today and the commodity currently trades at $3.31 per mmbtu, down 3% on the day. The MCX Natural Gas futures are currently trading at Rs 236.10 per mmbtu, down 4.76% on the day.
